A Review YM360 Discipleship Devotionals Collection on Esther, Hebrews, and James by Chad Poe.

My long-time friend Chad Poe kindly sent me his collection of four-week student devotionals on Esther, Hebrews, and James.  Chad is a veteran of youth ministry, a well-known speaker, a ministry coach, and a writer.   He brings his years of wisdom and insight to these three books.  Simple, easy-to-read daily devotionals present profound truths in accessible ways to the average teen reader.

Here are quick overviews of each of these outstanding resources.

1. Esther: The Time is Now

While the first thought when grabbing this pink-covered book is that this is a devotional for girls only, it is not.  Written well for both girls and guys of your ministry, this is a thorough and thought-provoking study.

This devotional takes your students through the powerful narrative of courage, faith, and God’s providence story of Esther. The sessions explore key themes like standing firm in faith during adversity, recognizing God’s unseen work, and stepping into moments of calling. Through Esther’s story, youth are encouraged to see how their unique positions in life can be used for a greater purpose. It presents relevant applications of faith in the face of difficulty, teaching young people to trust in God’s plan even when it’s unclear.

A timely resource for the times our students find themselves living in.

2 Hebrews: Jesus is Better

This is an expositional study that guides students toward placing Jesus back in the center of their lives. It is by far one of the best teen devotionals on Hebrews I have seen. It is an easy hand-off for students desiring to go deeper in their faith or works well for a small group study.

This devotional dives into the book of Hebrews, focusing on Christ’s supremacy and the call to young believers to stay strong in their faith. The lessons present how Jesus is the perfect high priest and sacrifice, greater than anything the old covenant offered. Youth are encouraged to hold on to their faith and hope, especially in a culture that often opposes Christian values.

It is a rich theological study of Hebrews that allows teens to form their own faith foundation. Helping them build a solid understanding of who Christ is and why He is central to their faith!

3. James: The Walk Of Faith

Of the three, this is my personal favorite, not to diminish the other two at all. I am a fan of James’s book, so I saved this one for last in my review and my reading.  Like the others, it is a wealth of practical wisdom for your students.  It is also a challenge. Chad does not hold back in his authenticity and honesty.  He presents James as it was intended to redirect us back to the journey of faith in Christ alone.

This devotional provides an honest, action-oriented look at Christian living. It walks youth through the struggles between faith and works, wisdom, controlling our tongue, and living active faith. Chad, like James, challenges youth not just to hear God’s word but to do it, offering specific ways they can live everyday life. This devotional helps students see that their actions reflect their faith.  It also puts the importance of spiritual maturity and integrity front and center of the reader’s thoughts.
